Microsoft: We account for 15% of Thai smartphone market

breezi_placeit-1

President of Microsoft International Jean-Philippe Courtois has claimed that 15 percent of Thai smartphone owners are now using Microsoft phones. He adds that Windows Phone went from just two-three percent to its current market share in only 15 months.

Counting on Nokia for growth

Jean-Philippe says:

We aspire to have the third-biggest system in the mobile-device world. Key to this is our Windows Phone and our partnership with Nokia and a few others, where we are reaching a tipping point in some markets. We have strong aspirations with our strong partner Nokia to enable a lot of apps.

Microsoft also claims that the company just broke 20 percent market share with Lumia in Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam combined, so it’s optimistic about the Windows Phone platform.

e-Marketer says otherwise

EMarketer disagrees with Microsoft’s claims, however. According to the research company, Windows Phone is only used by one percent of smartphone users in urban Thailand.

Indeed, Microsoft’s claims do sound too good to be true. Personally, I haven’t met anyone in my circle who uses the Windows phone just yet. 15 percent does sounds like a really high number, especially when you look at the global market share trends in general: Nielsen, two percent; Gartner, 3.3 percent; or IDC, 3.7 percent.
