There once was a time where screams filled the air and girls were actually seen entering internet gaming cafes. That was back when Valve’s Left 4 Dead first hit computer screens. And that era might just return with the recently announced Evolve.
Developed by the creators of Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock Studios, and to be published this fall by 2K Games, Evolve is a sci-fi multiplayer shooter that pits four players against another player-controlled monster that grows and basically evolves as matches progress.
Each hunter character has its own items and abilities, while the monster character has a ton of attacks for players to choose from. Think of it as Left 4 Dead co-op play, but the opposing team of zombies is an awesome, terrifying amalgamation of all available baddies, coming at you all at once.
There’s little information available now regarding the game, but GameInformer has set up a microsite that promises a new update in two days time.
They’ve also revealed the box art for Evolve in an article that lauds the cover artist for not going the way of ‘the dude with the gun’. We think that monster footprint just looks unnecessarily like the Left 4 Dead covers though, considering Turtle Rock are adamant Evolve will be more than ‘Left 4 Aliens’.
We’ll see, though. The unfortunate thing for Evolve isn’t just the lack of Asia-specific launch info (we exist too, America!). This co-op shooter is for the next-gen console and PC only, and while it promises to be quite the looker at the very least, I’m doubting its affordability for developing countries. One reason the Left 4 Dead series managed to soar here was its low specs; it was playable on even the most worthless of Internet cafe computers.
Evolve sounds like it’s going to be a lot like the beast it features, and I’m not sure that’s going to be good for us.
