Sea says it will add over 2,000 jobs in Malaysia

Shopee’s parent company Sea Group said it will generate over 2,000 jobs in Malaysia, which is a rather surprising announcement in this cost-cutting environment.

The company made the commitment during a meeting with officials from Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry at its headquarters in Singapore.

Accordingly, Sea plans to open a global cloud computing center and a new warehouse for Shopee in Malaysia. It also looks to set up cloud services as well as data hosting and processing in the country.

The cloud center is slated to be open in the first quarter of 2024. While the company didn’t share a timeline for the ecommerce warehouse, it will be a 1.4-million square-foot facility to be located in Bukit Raja, Klang. The ministry said it will be among the biggest of its kind in Malaysia.

Sea reportedly had to cut 7,000 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, last year amid slower growth for all of its segments.

It’s also estimated that the firm’s share price dropped by almost 80% in 2022.
