Chinese drivers can soon buy Teslas on Alibaba’s Tmall

Prospective Tesla owners will soon be able to purchase a brand new Model S from Alibaba’s Tmall marketplace (h/t to TechNode).
The new cars will go on sale on November 11, during the Single’s Day shopping extravaganza akin to Cyber Monday in the United States. They’ll be sold through the official Tesla flagship storefront on Tmall, which will be the first time the cars are sold in China anywhere besides the company’s official site.
Buyers can put down an RMB50,000 (US$8,200) deposit, which will be stored in the customer’s Alibaba Yuebao mutual fund. The customer then pays the rest when he or she goes to pick up the car at one of five dealerships in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, or Shenzhen.
Tesla has opened up sales in 38 cities across China via its own website.
TechNode notes that Alibaba and Tesla have worked together on making Alipay an option for buying a Tesla in China, and Tesla also added charging stations to Alibaba-owned Autonavi’s online maps.
