KDDI’s innovation fund tabs MistCDN and Ossia for fresh funds

funding

Last summer, KDDI launched a new US$50 million fund. Today, two more startups received funding from the Open Innovation Fund (which is operated by Global Brain, with the announcement coming at the Japanese telco’s seventh demo day. Terms for the deals were not disclosed.

Mist Technologies makes a clever browser plugin that allows browsers in a similar geographical location that are streaming the same content to share it amongst themselves. This means that slow upload times for popular content can be avoided.

The other startup is Ossia, a US-based firm specializing in wireless charging. Through its Cota charger, any Cota-equipped device within a ten-meter radius can be charged securely and wirelessly.

The Mist investment follows that firm winning KDDI Mugen Labo’s sixth demo day last July. KDDI further confirmed that it is assisting Mist in expanding its client base.

According to KDDI, Ossia is considering an entrance into Japan. KDDI would be on hand to guide it through that process. Sweetening the deal is that KDDI announced it has just brought on tech manufacturer Hitachi as a partner for its startup-focused activities.
