KakaoTalk now lets friend schedule meetups, adds Blackberry Connect integration

KakaoTalk, a popular chat app from South Korea with 27M daily active users, now has a new Schedule feature that lets friends make appointments with one another from within the app.

The new capability, announced yesterday, adds to an already extensive feature set which includes games, voice chat, and purchasable emoticons. This raises the stakes in Asia’s mobile chat battle, where Kakao faces stiff competition from Line, WeChat, and Whatsapp, and Facebook Messenger.

Schedule enables users to create events that friends can RSVP immediately. Once friends have tapped the ‘attend’ button, they can save the event to their smartphone’s calender. The feature will be available only on iPhone and Android initially.

The new feature is available within the app’s group chat function, which also enables users to arrange conference calls and even share files and photos.

To bolster its expansion efforts in Indonesia, Kakao has been vying for a slice of the Indonesian market, unveiling a new version of its Blackberry app which includes Blackberry Connect integration. This allows Blackberry users to send invitations to one another to chat within KakaoTalk.

The company is certainly aiming to establish KakaoTalk as the most full-featured chat app around. This year, it has plans to integrate third-party apps like maps and music players with its flagship product.
