TikTok confirmed on Wednesday (July 1) that it had laid off employees in Indonesia, without specifying how many staff members or which departments were affected.
Indonesian tech community platform Ecommurz posted that ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, had reportedly laid off 90% of Tokopedia’s workforce.
“We are realigning our R&D organization toward areas that can drive sustainable long-term growth for our business, as well as for the creator and seller communities on our platform. This was not an easy decision, and our focus is on supporting colleagues affected by the transition,” TikTok said in a statement sent to Tech in Asia.
TikTok acquired a 75% stake in Tokopedia in December 2023, after which the two companies merged.
Last year, Tech in Asia reported that the integration sparked dissatisfaction among many sellers, who said Tokopedia had lost its identity as a local champion.
Earlier today, Bloomberg also reported that TikTok is slashing about 300 jobs in Dublin, Ireland.
