Japan’s Infinity Venture Partners have launched a Japanese language classifieds website. The new site, called JMTY.jp (or jimoti), will provide listings in categories such as housing, jobs, and buying and selling of goods.
Classifieds websites have not been very popular among Japanese users to date, and there is no prominent equivalent to Craigslist. eBay’s Kijiji has a Japanese language version, but the service does not look especially popular with meagre traffic stats on Alexa. Our friends over at Asiajin say that there is just “no culture for classifieds in Japan.”
IVP cites the growing penetration of smartphone use in Japan as a reason for launching the service now, hoping that this will result in more users. We’ll just have to wait and see if the company’s decision turns out to be the right one.
