Possession of child porn is illegal in Japan and Internet service providers are stepping up effort to block access to child porn websites.
That sounds like good news to me. With the help of 9 Internet service providers, more than 100 related websites are currently blocked. The number is expected to rise as the Internet Hotline Center of Japan provides more addresses to be blocked.
The list of 9 Internet providers includes NEC Biglobe, NTT Communications and KDDI, which combined coverage accounts for about 50-70 percent of online households in Japan, according to the National Policy Agency. 4 main search engines, including Google and Yahoo Japan have ensured that child porn related websites wouldn’t be shown on their search results page.
In Japan, law enforcers took action in 1,342 child porn cases in 2010, up 43.5 percent from the previous year, to reach a new record since such data was first compiled in 2000, the AFP reported.
It’s a rising problem but as far as I can see, a concerted effort is made by various technology companies to help curb the “child pornography problem” in Japan. The root of the problem isn’t tackled but at least the distribution channel for child porn is greatly hampered.
