Welcome to On the Rise! Delivered every Tuesday via email and through the Tech in Asia website, this free newsletter breaks down the biggest stories and trends in emerging tech. If you’re not a subscriber, get access by registering here.

Hello there,

Let’s start with a quick recap.

Sometime in the summer of 2021, Ion Mobility, a Singapore-based maker of smart electric motorbikes, announced that Joel Chang, its co-founder and former COO, had parted ways with the company. CEO James Chan and Chang cited professional differences for the move.

Now, Ion Mobility has secured a temporary injunction against Chang. This bars him from being directly or indirectly involved with any competitor in Southeast Asia until the case is completed or the court issues another order overruling this decision.

In particular, the court order prevents Chang from doing business with Charged Asia, a Singapore-headquartered electric motorbike firm that has operations in Indonesia.

Our second big story documents the rise of The Gentlebros, an indie game studio in Singapore. Backed by a small team of seven, the profitable firm’s purr-fect strategy currently revolves around the Cat Quest brand.

There’s another story we have today that’ll likely grab your attention: A Temasek entity has concluded an investigation involving Liu Feng-Yuan, co-founder of BasisAI.

Temasek had acquired the AI firm in 2021 and launched an investigation following a whistleblower complaint against. More on this in a bit.

Talking about AI, this edition will also dive into how generative AI is turning out to be a helping hand in designing lifesaving drugs and customizing cancer treatment, while having a better bedside manner than some physicians I know.
