A home services startup trying to break the chain with its business model was rewarded today, while an edtech startup proves that you can’t replace a good tutor. In the meantime, a crowdfunding platform rather fittingly makes its first investment in adtech, and handpainted clothes continue to find success on the global funway. Check out these four startups that received money today.

FlipClass

Edtech startups come in many varieties. Bangalore-based FlipClass, which helps users find home, online, and mobile tutors, bagged US$1 million today from publishing house S Chand and Co, as well as Blume Ventures.

Founded in 2014 by Vineet Dwivedi, FlipClass connects tutors with students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. A graduate of IIT-Kanpur, Vineet is no stranger to edtech companies, having worked for Career Mantra and Pearson Education Services. He has also worked for Infosys.

Tutors can come to students’ homes or interact with them remotely. The startup uses its own assessment tool and app, which uses a chat interface so that students can talk to their tutors in real-time.

India’s tutoring market is expected to grow to US$16 billion by 2017.

We move from edtech to adtech. Pune-based advertising startup Proximit has secured US$150,000 in early-stage funding from 1Crowd, a crowdfunding platform like LetsVenture. Twenty investors also participated.

1Crowd is specifically directed toward startup investing, offering a network of mentors as well as a way to raise funds. Proximit is its first investment.

Founded in 2014 by Abhay Bora, Yash Muthu, and Kamlesh Sancheti, Proximit currently places tablets in auto-rickshaws in Pune. Through the tablets, advertisers can engage with those catching a ride.
