The letter in Straits Times (Online Subscription needed) today by Wong Siew Hoong (Director, Schools, Ministry of Education) is a response to an earlier letter by Mr Sanjeev Kumar Roy (‘Primary 3 pupil taught MBA-style curriculum’; ST, July 23).
I had the chance to read the earlier letter but could not find it in the ST Archives anymore. That was before sgentrepreneurs came totally online. Basically, the earlier letter was criticising that the school was teaching a technique in the MBA course to primary school kids in a rote-learning fashion. He brought up the issue that being an entrepreneur is a ‘cultural philosophy’ rather than a concept.
Do you think that entrepreneurship is something that can be taught? Actually, my opinion is that entrepreneurship is a lifestyle or an alternative career choice. Not everyone can be an entrepreneur. Going through an entrepreneurship course provides two things: (i) to expose you to a different career choice like being your own boss, and (ii) learning certain skills that can help you to implement an idea or a proposal, whether these things can be translated into profitable businesses is another matter altogether. Besides, there are many kinds of entrepreneurs.
