Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (Indosat) and GoTo have announced the development of Sahabat-AI, a language model ecosystem for Bahasa Indonesian and local dialects.
Launched on Indonesia AI Day, the initiative aims to promote digital sovereignty and enable Indonesians to create AI-based services in their languages, bridging a gap left by global AI models.
The project uses Nvidia AI Enterprise software, including Nvidia NeMo, to train the model for better language understanding in an Indonesian context.
According to a statement, Sahabat-AI can process vast amounts of data in Indonesian languages and dialects, preserving cultural nuances. The first rollout includes models with 8 billion and 9 billion parameters.
Indosat will support Sahabat-AI’s growth through its GPU Merdeka AI cloud service, using Nvidia Hopper-based accelerated computing. Additionally, Hippocratic AI, a safety-focused language model for healthcare, plans to integrate Sahabat-AI to offer tailored services for Indonesians.
This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s Golden Indonesia 2045 plan, aimed at advancing national AI capabilities and enhancing the country’s position in AI innovation globally.
