In brief: Indonesia retracts new ecommerce tax rules

• Indonesia retracted new rules that require ecommerce sellers to share data with tax authorities to avoid further confusion, the country’s finance minister, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, said on Friday.
• The rules initially stated that all operators of online marketplaces, including Tokopedia and Bukalapak, will have to detail their turnover and share the data with authorities.
• No new taxes were being applied, but the rules were put in place to clarify what taxes each marketplace player is obliged to pay and to “create an equal treatment with conventional businesses,” the tax department said when the rules were announced in January.
