Dear readers,
One rainy afternoon in a cafe on Orchard Road, a friend asked me, “Why do you like covering startups?”
I thought for a while and said, “I like rooting for underdogs who are disrupting the status quo.” This also explains why I’ve favored working at small companies throughout my career.
But things are about to change: You might have heard from our CEO Willis that SPH Media, Singapore’s largest news publisher, is in the process of acquiring Tech in Asia.

When it closes, the deal would be a full circle moment for me. I was once a wide-eyed intern at SPH, where I marveled at how my editor could find an angle out of what seemed like a non-story.
As a cub reporter, I had late nights calling sources, desperately asking them to talk to me before the print deadline. I’ve roamed the streets trying to interview strangers who shunned me because they thought I was an insurance agent.
I then took these experiences to my eventual calling: tech and business journalism.
Fifteen years on, my team and I will roll everything we’ve learned back to the place that kickstarted the career of many journalists. And I’m energized by what Tech in Asia and SPH Media can do together.
Our closest partner within the SPH Media will be The Business Times, a scrappy and seasoned team with the same conviction of delivering business journalism that is excellent, ethical, and viable.
For our loyal readers, know that the important things will stay the same.
Tech in Asia’s editorial team will continue building on the brand of content we’re known for and keep our independence. We’ll stay grounded, striving for perfection but owning up when mistakes are made.
After the acquisition, we’ll harness the combined expertise and economies of scale to enhance editorial coverage at both Tech in Asia and The Business Times.
