About US$3 million worth of NFTs were stolen from the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s (BAYC) followers due to an Instagram hack that saw 133 tokens ripped from 44 people, Mashable reported.
The team’s Twitter account issued an announcement revealing that their Instagram had been hacked and to avoid interacting with the account.
The hacked Instagram account shared a link that purportedly let BAYC investors connect to their crypto wallet to receive an exclusive freebie NFT. However, the phishing link enabled the hacker to make off with their NFT apes instead.
Allegedly, 23 of the stolen NFTs have already been sold for a total of US$2.4 million. Accessing the wall hacker’s wallet address, blockchain investigator @zachxbt found seven Mutant Apes, four Bored Apes, and three Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs, estimated to be worth a total of US$3 million.
There is no word yet on how the hacker gained access to the account.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club, from parent company Yuga Labs, is a highly sought-after collection of 10,000 unique NFTs built on the Ethereum blockchain that are valued at US$5 billion.
