The 99% AI traffic threat (and how business survives)

Tools for Humanity, co-founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania, aims to verify human identity online as AI-generated activity grows. Alex Blania, the company’s CEO, says the war on bots is already lost, pushing platforms to adopt a new identity layer to continue operating.
Best known for developing Worldcoin, the company recently launched World Chain to support this protocol. The network distinguishes between human users and automated agents, prioritizing verified transactions to ensure reliable access as AI traffic increasingly populates the web.
The cost of unchecked traffic
Trying to maintain the current internet infrastructure without identity layers is becoming impossible. Blania argues that AI-generated content will soon flood the web, causing major platforms to be unusable within two years.
“I think 99.9% or something of all internet traffic will be AI-driven,” Blania predicts.
Relying on old detection methods guarantees failure. He predicts that major platforms like X will become non-functional within months if they fail to adopt new technical standards to handle the flood of synthetic data.
“It’s not about combating the bots because that will be a lost cause,” he notes. “Every human on these platforms will need some version of a proof of being human and… to prove that their content is authentic.”
Navigating a new identity market
The move from finding bots to proving humanity is creating a new market. Companies are now under pressure to integrate verification layers to ensure their user base is real.
“Within Tinder Japan, it’s already live,” Blania explains. “You can prove that you are a real human. You will be able to prove that these are authentic profile pictures that you’re using, and you can prove your age.”
Defining the verification baseline
A digital ecosystem overrun by scripts can quickly lose its value. Blania identifies several sectors where this shift is already critical:
- Social Networks need proof of personhood to filter out misinformation farms and verify authentic users.
- Gaming requires strict identity checks to stop bots from cheating or farming in-game resources.
- Ticketing relies on verification to prevent automated scripts from buying out events in seconds.
Bridging biological intelligence
Proving identity is only the first step in the company’s roadmap. The broader goal is to build a direct interface between the human mind and AI, ensuring that humans maintain agency as technology advances.
“The mission more broadly is bridging artificial and biological intelligence,” Blania notes. “It is to accomplish a lot of things that I think will be super important for the future, like agency, experience, and freedom of people.”
