Aside from the government’s plan to hook-up every region of the country with an internet connection, some companies have also laid out plans to build WiFi hot-spots nationwide.
The national telco Telkom Indonesia has instituted an “Indonesia WiFi Program” which will also be carried out this year by Telkom’s subsidiaries , Telkomsel, Speedy, and Flexi. Telkomsel has planned to build 5,400 WiFi hot-spots nationwide. At present, Telkomsel already has 600 hot-spots across 10 cities in Indonesia. Speedy will set up 2,000 hot-spots this year, and has already opened spots in 312 places.
Sukardi Silalahi, general manager of Telkom Customer Service, told the Jakarta Globe about this program:
In the future, Telkom will apply a ‘single sign-on’ so that Speedy home users can also access the hot-spots free of charge. This also applies to users of Telkomsel and Flexinet.
This is good news for all internet users, especially students and mobile workers who often rely on wireless internet connections. That’s because they’re often cheaper and easier than mobile data plans, and can be found in public places like shopping malls, cafes, or even train stations. When this new program is completed, all cities in Indonesia may be like the Yogyakarta region, which is well-known not just as a tourist center but also as a student’s city with plenty of WiFi hot-spots for its students.
