Indonesia gave Research in Motion (RIM) two weeks but it only took the BlackBerry maker a few days to respond. RIM has confirmed its commitment to respect and follow the laws and will be working with carrier partners to make content filtering possible.
“RIM has been engaged with its [local] carrier partners and the government on this matter and continues to make it a top priority to implement satisfactory technical solutions with its partners,” it said in a press statement, which responded to earlier pleas from the minister on Twitter that the company complies with local regulations, the Jakarta Post reported.
With over 2 millions users in Indonesia, it is hard not to follow the government’s order. BlackBerry is one of the most popular smartphones in the country. Its popularity has even sparked Indonesians to start blogs that focus on BlackBerry tips and news. Berryindo, for example, has a comprehensive list of FAQ to help Indonesians BlackBerry users on problems.
Many Indonesians, however, did question the effectiveness of blocking pornography content on BlackBerries. Twitter user @TiffanyWilliam felt that this would not solve the root of the problem, as people will seek other channels for pornography content. Following her thoughts, the problem would continue, as there are many other devices with web browsing capabilities.
Analysts estimated that there are about 12 million BlackBerry handsets sold worldwide. Based on that figure, the Indonesia market accounts for more than 16 percent of BlackBerry’s global sales (in units). Clearly, RIM wouldn’t want to lose this growing market. But would sales slow after content filter is implemented? I would think so.
