The partnership between Groupon and Tencent, Gaopeng.com has finally started offering deals in China. For the time being, deals are available only in Beijing and Shanghai. The deal offers started today with Gaopeng sending an update at 0001 hours via China’s Twitter, Sina Weibo. The update introduces Gaopeng’s new water leisure park deal and indicates that fans that retweet the message could stand a chance to win a Gucci wallet.
Within hours, the update was shared over 500 times and attracted more than 50,000 fans on Sina Weibo. Besides Shanghai and Beijing, Gaopeng will also be starting group deal service in another 9 cities including Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
The speed of launch somehow surprises me, especially after the conflict between Groupon and Tencent. Tencent insisted that Gaopeng should adopt a localized Chinese look-and-feel while Groupon wants it westernized. The end result seems quite balance. The site looks authentically Groupon. Let’s see how it fares in China.
