Much has been written online about nailing the media pitch. In spite of that, many entrepreneurs continue to struggle with coming up with the perfect pitch. So what gives?

We spoke to members of Tech in Asia’s editorial team to find out the one thing about media pitches that gets them, and memorable examples of such. With tons of media pitches all fighting for attention, effectively pitching to writers might not be easy. But if done the right way, it sure can be worth it.

What catches your attention in a media pitch? When (entrepreneurs) explain what they do in maybe three lines, and they do it with as little jargon (tech, business or otherwise) as possible. They don’t rely on buzzwords and a rehearsed song-and-dance. They’re normal and polite.

Bio: I’ve been working around tech for most of my professional life. I’ve been a journalist for almost seven years and I have a tech law background. I’m always excited about meeting smart, creative people with innovative ideas!

Verticals/countries: I cover startups in Singapore, regardless of vertical. But I do have a soft spot for hardware startups, deep tech, legaltech, internet of things, healthcare, and social impact.

What catches your attention in a media pitch? Just presenting their pitch in a clear and concise manner, with a clear reason why we should cover you in the heading. Providing press releases, fact sheets, media kits, images, and videos. I like stories focusing on a solid product, good traction, or a strong human interest story.

Example: I thought 90 Seconds pitched well, even though they did it through a PR agency.

Their subject was this, “90 Seconds, Singapore cloud video production platform raises US$7.5 million.”

It had a concise summary of what makes the site compelling – “90 Seconds gives customers everything they need for a video under one, comprehensive software platform and marketplace for video production. This allows anyone in the world to purchase, plan, shoot, edit and review professional videos across the globe – all online or from their mobile. The video production process has typically never been this streamlined, affordable and easy to use.”

It included a useful link explaining how the site works, a media kit, and videos documenting the startup’s journey.
