China bans sale of sex toys, medicines, other items on live-streaming platforms

“China’s Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday released draft regulations for the live-streaming industry, declaring that items such as sex toys, medicines, spy devices, and foreign newspapers can no longer be sold in these sessions, as Beijing tightens its scrutiny of the fast-growing ecommerce sector,” reported South China Morning Post.

Details:

  • Teenagers under the age of 16 will be banned from live streaming, according to the draft rules. All live streamers are required to use Mandarin, China’s official language, when live.
  • Live streamers are also forbidden from gatekeeping feedback and faking reviews. As per the new rules, the ecommerce records of live streamers, merchants, and agencies will serve as the basis of a credit system to be built by the state.

Dive deeper:

  • Citing KPMG estimates, the South China Morning Post reported that China’s live-streaming ecommerce sector was worth 1 trillion yuan or US$154 billion.
  • Beijing has recently been imposing restrictions and penalties on tech giants headquartered in the country via the State Administration for Market Regulation, China’s competition watchdog.
