GoTo Financial has officially launched a standalone GoPay app in Indonesia. Previously, the digital wallet was embedded in the Gojek and Tokopedia apps.
Having a standalone app opens up GoPay’s user base beyond just Gojek and Tokopedia users. It would also help GoPay target the 48% of the Indonesian population or 97.7 million people who remain underbanked.
This puts GoPay on par with e-wallet rivals Ovo, Dana, and LinkAja, which were all rolled out as standalone apps.
GoPay’s official launch follows the app’s pilot in Indonesia, which began in April 2023.
The app is light-sized to save on phone capacity and to allow for a simple, user-friendly interface, said Hans Patuwo, GoTo’s president of financial technology.
As a standalone app, GoPay now provides a number of features including bill payments, data package and phone credit purchases, and a five-step account protection system.
It also offers 100 free fund transfers per month for transactions between GoPay users, GoPay-to-bank account, and bank account-to-bank account. In addition, users can create an expense report to help them manage their finances through the app.
The advent of Indonesia’s nationwide QRIS system has helped traditional banks make strides in digital payments. In late 2022, mobile banking apps from incumbent banks BCA, Bank Mandiri, and BRI – which all supports QRIS payments – were the country’s top finance apps in terms of monthly active users, beating out Dana, Ovo, and LinkAja.
