Google parent Alphabet to axe 12,000 jobs

Google’s parent Alphabet is cutting 12,000 jobs, CEO Sundar Pichai announced in an internal email to staff. The move is expected to affect staff in both the US and across the globe.

The cuts account for about 6% of Alphabet’s total workforce.

According to Pichai, the retrenchment will cut across product areas, functions, levels and regions.

“The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decision that led us here,” he said in the email.

As part of severance, the company is offering payouts, bonuses, and health insurance to affected staff.

This is the latest jolt to the tech sector, with bigwig industry names such as Microsoft, Meta, Salesforce all slashing their workforces.

Similarly to Microsoft, Alphabet is gearing up to offer new AI experiences for users, developers, and businesses.

“We have a substantial opportunity in front of us with AI across our products and are prepared to approach it boldly and responsibly,” Pichai said.
