The Day The Music Died: Google India Shutters Music Search Portal

Google India shuts music search portal

Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) music search and streaming service has shut down in India. Formerly located at google.co.in/music, the page now redirects to the Google India homepage. Google India’s music portal launched to fanfare in October 2010 with pop music and Bollywood tunes from partner sites such as Saregama and In.com.

The Google India music search shutdown was spotted earlier today by the NextBigWhat team. There’s no official word yet from Google on the closure.

The same music portal was shut by Google in China last September. In that instance, Google said the “impact of this product is not as great as we expected”. Perhaps Google is now focusing on Play Music, which is the company’s challenger to iTunes and other music download/streaming services. However, the Google Play Music store is not available in India.
