China’s Didi Chuxing said it had set up a joint venture with Beijing Electric Vehicle Co., a unit of state-owned BAIC, to work on new energy vehicle and artificial intelligence projects.
The business, BAIC-Xiaoju New Energy Auto Technology, aims to develop “next-generation connected-car systems,” Didi, China’s largest ride-hailing operator, said on Monday.

Among Didi’s 31 million drivers, 400,000 own electric cars. The new unit gives Didi a chance to shape future electric cars in ways that suit its ride-hailing service.
BAIC aims to sell 220,000 electric cars in China this year. The country saw around 1 million plug-in electric vehicle sales in 2018.
