Gojek makes commitment to shift completely to electric vehicles by 2030

Indonesian ride-hailing and payments giant Gojek plans to make every car and motorcycle on its platform into an electric vehicle by 2030. It will do this by entering into manufacturing and leasing agreements, Gojek co-CEO Kevin Aluwi told Reuters.

The company in a statement said that it has launched an in-app feature called GoGreener Carbon Offset – a business-to-consumer carbon offsetting feature – for its ride-hailing services. It has also commissioned feasibility studies and pilot projects to accelerate the adoption of EVs.

The initiative is part of the company’s goal to achieve zero emissions, zero waste, and zero barriers by 2030. While zero emissions and zero waste are part of its environmental sustainability agenda, it also looks to achieve zero barriers, which includes efforts toward gender equality and corporate diversity.

Gojek unveiled these pledges in its first annual Sustainability Report, which detailed its progress on these fronts to date and the way forward in implementing environmental, social, and governance practices.

The company claims that the report is the first to be compiled by a Southeast Asian internet company in alignment with international standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board.

Some of Gojek’s GoGreener initiatives include committing to conduct an annual inventory for scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, as well as waste accounting.

The company has also launched the GoTransit service to better integrate its first- and last-mile transportation with public transportation.

Since August 2019, the Indonesian super app has curbed over 13 tons of single-use plastic waste through a paid cutlery program, it said in a statement. It has also collected over 6.3 tons of single-use waste through various programs in 2019 and has several new pilot projects commencing in 2021.

To ensure greater accountability, the company is forming a Sustainability Advisory Council made up of experts from various organizations including UN Women, the ASEAN Centre of Energy, the University of Indonesia, and others.

“With less than 10 years to achieve the [UN] Social Development Goals, we have to act now. […] We also know we cannot achieve this alone and will leverage our network of like-minded partners to accelerate our progress through innovative and transformative expertise and capabilities,” said Tanah Sullivan, group head of Sustainability at Gojek.
