Taiwan-based Gogoro has partnered with energy company Enel X to deploy over 2,500 battery-swapping stations across 1,000 locations in the EnelX Taiwan virtual power plant (VPP).
A VPP is a cloud-based power plant, which combines the capacities of different distributed energy resources like electric vehicle batteries. This process helps optimize and monitor power by adjusting energy consumption and generation across grids. The method is also beneficial for introducing renewable energy resources.
Last year, Gogoro and Enel X piloted the project and found that the network could pause charging in the event of a grid imbalance and provide energy to the grid as needed. The companies say this is the first commercial deployment of this tech in the world.
So far, the partners have launched 1,300 battery-swapping stations across 500 locations and expect to complete installing 2,500 stations by mid-2023.
Founded in 2011 by Horace Luke and Matt Taylor, Gogoro specializes in supporting the electric two-wheeler market. In addition to putting up battery-swapping stations, the firm also offers its own range of electric scooters.
The company went public on Nasdaq last year at a valuation of US$2.4 billion.
Gogoro recently collaborated with India-based food delivery firm Zomato to increase electric vehicle adoption among the latter’s drivers.
