JioMart, Reliance Retail’s online platform, is reportedly laying off over 1,000 employees and could slash 9,900 more roles soon, the Economic Times first reported.
JioMart is also planning to shutter more than half of its 150 fulfillment centers after acquiring German retailer Metro AG’s Indian business in 2022. The layoff and fulfillment center closure are part of the Indian retail giant’s efforts to improve its margins.
In February, JioMart shut down its quick commerce service to reduce heavy cash burn. The JioMart Express platform was launched in a beta phase in March 2022 for a selected user base, promising grocery delivery within 90 minutes.
The company also partnered with Meta to enable grocery shopping on WhatsApp, allowing Indian consumers to shop from the JioMart catalog and make payments without leaving the messaging app.
