After seeing Charlie’s post on What games did Chinese gamers search for most in 2013?, I became a bit curious as to what Japanese gamers were searching for last year. Google Trends has nicely compiled all of the data for us as to what the Japanese gamers were interested in, now let’s break it down.
#10: Kaizoku Musou 2 (Pirate Warriors 2)
Based in the ever popular One Piece world, it is little wonder why this PS3 and Vita game was so popular in 2013. The game was released in Japan on March 20, 2013 and became a downloadable title across the globe in the summer. If you are a fan of the series, and haven’t looked into Kaizoku Musou 2 yet, just watch this clip and then go out and download it.
#9: Gundam Breaker (ガンダムブレイカー)
Gundam Breaker came out last summer for PS3 and Vita, and was immediately a hit in Japan. Gundam has an incredibly large fan base in Japan, and when a game comes out that allows you to not only battle but also build your own mobile suits you know it’s going to be big.
#8: GTA 5
This believe it or not, came as a big shocker to me. It’s kind of hard to imagine mild mannered Japan enjoying Grand Theft Auto 5, but seeing as it was one of the biggest game of the year maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised. It might be interesting to note that the game was toned down for its Japan release. Here are some examples.
#7: Dragon Quest X (ドラクエ10)
Dragon Quest X has been out for the Wii and Wii U for sometime now, but what made this MMORPG so search worthy was its smartphone release last month. The game is a Japan exclusive and appears as if it will stay that way. At least you can watch this beautiful ad for it.
