Zoo Asks Fans to Pick Baby Orangutan’s Name on Facebook

A baby male orangutan (als called “ah meng”), was born on 31 January 2011. To celebrate the new orangutan life journey, the Singapore Zoo is asking Facebook fans to choose a name for this newborn baby. A customized Facebook voting app was installed within the page to provide convenience for voters. Within the voting app, the zookeepers provided 4 naming options with explanations:

1. Ah Boy: His zookeepers say that this little one is amiable and always has a smile. This name is a common term of endearment for many boys at home in Singapore.

2. Bino: He may be small now, but he’s certainly going to grow up to be a courageous one. This name means ‘brave’ in Bahasa Indonesia.

3. Terang: His smile is as cheerful as the morning sun. This name means ‘bright’ in Malay.

4. Xing Xing: Celebrate the life of our newest star! In Chinese, this name means both ‘star’ and ‘ape’.

With 2 more weeks to go, Bino is so far the most voted name. A lucky voter will also win free Jungle Breakfast, zoo admission for 5 and also a photo taking session with the baby orangutan. It’s a great way to keep fans engaged and updated on the Zoo’s latest movement. I bet many wouldn’t have noticed the Singapore zoo until seeing it on Facebook. That brings back some good old memories. I guess it’s about time to visit the zoo again.
