Hello reader,
Travel is starting up again, and I’m excited to go abroad for the first time in over two years. I’ve already booked my first trip out of the country: I’m heading to Thailand in a few weeks, and I’ll be taking budget carrier AirAsia to get there.
Like many other airlines, AirAsia – now known as Capital A – had a tough time over the last two years. In 2020, it had to let staff go, seek government aid, and restructure its debt to survive. The firm also rebranded by changing its name and diversified its offerings by developing its own super app and going into tech.
But now that travel is making a comeback, things are looking up for the company.
However, Capital A has faced some hurdles recently, such as a funding setback a few months ago. The consortium led by its e-wallet unit, BigPay, also failed to secure a digital banking license in Malaysia.
As Capital A seeks to soar again, who are the crew taking it to new heights? That’s what we’ll explore today.
Today we look at:
- The folks piloting Capital A
- How fresh funding will fuel this ecommerce enabler
- Other newsy highlights such as YouTrip’s new corporate card and the latest acquisition of a Byju’s business unit

When Covid-19 grounded – quite literally – the global aviation industry in 2020, budget carrier AirAsia made a pivot into tech, splitting itself into two main units: aviation (AirAsia) and digital (AirAsia Digital).
The digital arm involves the firm’s super app, food delivery, logistics, and even fintech. It also took on a new name – Captial A – early this year.
Here’s a look at the folks leading the firm as it enters a new era of being more than just an airline.
