Indonesia to be world’s fourth-largest smartphone market by 2018
The world will have two billion active smartphone users by 2016, with China, India, and Indonesia leading the way in growth. Looking ahead even further, the three nations will collectively add over 400 million new smartphone users from 2014 to 2018. These new numbers and projections are from a new report by Emarketer.
We’ve already examined the rising adoption of smartphones in China, so now let’s focus on Indonesia. The marquee stat for Indonesia is that the archipelago country will surpass 100 million active smartphone users by 2018, becoming the fourth-largest smartphone user population (behind, at that time, China, India, and the US, respectively).

Indonesia’s strong smartphone uptake bodes well for growth in ecommerce, which is largely happening on mobile in the country. It’s also notable how Indonesia will outpace Brazil – another emerging market with a sizable, young population – in terms of smartphones in the next few years. The two nations have identical figures at present, but Indonesia accelerates past Brazil from next year onwards.
