Video editor from TikTok maker ByteDance tops US app charts
CapCut, a video-editing app from TikTok owner ByteDance, is the latest Chinese offering to top US app stores, with users leveraging the app for better posts on the short-video platform, TechCrunch reported.
Details:
- CapCut allows users to add myriad filters, effects, and music to their videos. It currently has over 250 million installs across Android and iOS stores, according to Sensor Tower data.
- The app’s rise in the US follows the success of its Chinese counterpart Jianying among users of Douyin, ByteDance’s version of TikTok for China.
Context:
- CapCut appears to be following the same app monetization strategies of a number of Chinese tech titans, which involves offering their products for free then exploring micro-transaction opportunities after gaining a wide user base.
- The app works like the Chinese photo editor Meitu, the app that has became synonymous with “selfie beautifier” in its home market.
