Facebook’s growth never fails to amaze us. Over the years, the social network has slowly become the de facto network in most parts of the world.
Pingdom did a nice job comparing Facebook’s growth with similar size countries: Japan in 2008, Indonesia in 2009 and the number of Internet users in Asia in 2011. Now, imagine what would be the next few countries of comparison as Facebook grows larger. Perhaps India or China would be next as Facebook surges toward the billion users milestone.
Asia and Facebook
Facebook penetration rate is the lowest in Asia at 17.49 percent, according to SocialBakers. There are a lot of countries left in Asia for Facebook to conquer, including China and Russia. To hit the billion users milestone, Facebook has much work to do in this continent. That was probably why we heard rumors that Facebook is entering China.
It’s a logical business step coming sooner or later. Otherwise, it would be harder for Facebook to enter China as Renren’s popularity continues to rise. Besides China, watch out for India too. The number of Facebook users in India could soon overtake Indonesia or even the U.S as Internet usage becomes more widespread in the country.
