India bans 118 Chinese apps, including PUBG Mobile
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said these apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state, and public order.” The move, it says, would help safeguard the interests of the tens of millions of mobile and internet users in the country.
These bans come after the country blocked 59 Chinese apps in June, including video-sharing app TikTok, which counted India as its biggest international market with nearly 660 million installs since 2017.
The new apps that have been banned include search engine Baidu, business collaboration suite WeChat Work, cloud storage service Tencent Weiyun, the Rise of Kingdoms game, a VPN for TikTok, ecommerce service Mobile Taobao, online video platform Youku, news outlet Sina News, among others.
In July, Tencent’s PUBG had more than 40 million monthly active users in India, according to one of the top mobile insights firms. Information from research firm Sensor Tower reveals that India accounts for more than a quarter of the titles lifetime installs.
In April, the country also made a change to its foreign investment policy that requires Chinese investors to get approval from New Delhi before they can write new checks to Indian firms. Following this, it was reported that China’s tech giant Alibaba would not put in fresh funds to expand its investments in India for at least six months.
