AI-driven mental health app raises $2m in pre-series A round led by Pi Ventures

India-based mental health tech startup Wysa raised roughly US$2 million in a pre-series A round led by local early-stage venture fund Pi Ventures.

Kae Capital, which previously led a US$1.3 million seed round for Wysa in 2017, also participated in the round alongside other investors.

The company uses AI to drive an “emotionally intelligent” chatbot that acts as a virtual coach that combines empathetic listening with evidence-based therapeutic techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, and motivational interviewing. It plans to use the proceeds from the funding to further strengthen its technology and to prepare for its planned expansion.

The company claims that since being launched late 2016, it has helped more than 1.2 million people from 30 different countries. The company also says that its efficacy has been validated through a peer-reviewed study and is recommended by the UK’s National Health Service.

“Wysa has been co-designed by therapists, users, and designers over hundreds of iterations and 80 million conversations,” adds Wysa co-founder Jo Aggarwal.
