Around 2020 to 2022, it seemed that edtech was a pretty big deal.
We did an episode of Tech in Asia Explains all about the opportunities in and future for edtech, and it seemed likely that how we taught and learned was going to look markedly different.
That doesn’t seem to have happened. And Southeast Asia’s edtech sector has gone through tough times – some companies in the sector have had to lay off staff and scale back operations, while others have ceased operations entirely.
Still, that doesn’t mean the edtech sector is down and out. In Indonesia alone, there were around 51 edtech companies as of July 2024. And some of them are making their mark by turning their attention to opportunities within a whole new customer segment.

Meanwhile, others emphasize community and upskilling, and some focus on helping teachers manage their administrative tasks.
- Digital challenges: These teacher-focused startups also help instructors adapt to modern education, such as how to navigate and leverage disruptive technologies like generative AI.
- Opportunity abounds: Since improving teachers’ competencies requires collaborating with multiple stakeholders, edtech startups can work across different sectors, which include the government, private companies, educational institutions, and teacher communities.
