LivingSocial Matches Members Donations for Japan Earthquake Relief

Great, one more donation channel to add in the “How can you help” list for the Japan Earthquake relief.

LivingSocial, the U.S daily deal site has partnered with The American Red Cross to aid relief efforts in Japan. When a LivingSocial member makes a $5 donation, LivingSocial will match that donation up to $1 million. In fact the amount has already hit $1 million. On the site, it states $1.2 million was raised so far with about 9 more hours to go. The campaign was a huge successful.

“We talk about the power of the LivingSocial platform for merchants all the time,” said Tim O’Shaughnessy, CEO and co-founder of LivingSocial.

“We have an opportunity to leverage the power of our 24 million members by matching their contributions to make a difference for those in need in Japan.”

It’s a great way to leverage the power of community. Groupon Japan, Alibaba, Paypal, Amazon and iTunes are some of the companies who have also leveraged their community to help Japan’s earthquake victims. Reuters reported that the overall cost of the multiple disasters exceeded $170 billion. Every cent would mean a lot to Japan.
