Digital natives (AKA digital citizens) are like the baby boomers of our generation. We use this word to define those who go to Google for answers, grab a phone to check Facebook in the morning, shop online, and much more. These are people who grew up in a digital lifestyle.
In Thailand, the latest report says that the number of mobile phones exceeded the nation’s population. The country’s internet penetration in 2012 was at 26.5 percent, up from 18.2 percent in 2008. That seems like a good number. But how digitally native are we?
According to ITU, the UN’s official source of global ICT statistics, Thailand’s digital native number is growing quite fast. In fact, around 4.38 million digital natives live in Thailand, which accounts for 6.3 percent of the whole population and 42.3 percent of Thais aged 15 to 24.
Among the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) countries, we rank number three after Vietnam and Indonesia. China’s 75.2 million digital natives only account for roughly six percent of the whole population. Thailand is still ahead with 6.3 percent.
