Xiaomi’s year is fast turning from challenging to disastrous. While it has been plausible all year that the Chinese startup might shrink somewhat in its home market in the face of stronger challengers, nobody was ready for such terrible numbers.
Xiaomi has been kung fu kicked from first place to fourth.
Xiaomi just saw a 38.4 percent drop in smartphone shipment volumes in China, according to data published today by IDC for April to June compared to the same timeframe last year. In that period it went from selling 17.1 million to 10.5 million – and that’s in an overall smartphone market that grew 4.6 percent in the past year.
As a result, Xiaomi has been kung fu kicked from first place down to fourth.
The new data shows the latest phase of the rise of three new stars in China’s phone market – Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo. Those are, respectively, the new top three. Apple, which was third this time last year, is now pushed down to fifth, losing 31.7 percent in volume in the past 12 months.
But it’s clearly Xiaomi that’s getting the biggest whipping right now.
Xiaomi makes more than just smartphones, though its mobile line-up is still seen as the core business. Aside from phones like the Redmi 3, Mi Max, and Mi5, Xiaomi makes the Mi Band fitness tracker, a “hoverboard,” a drone, a range of smart TVs, Mi Air Purifier, Mi Water Purifier, a smart rice cooker, and an array of other web-connected home appliances.
