Co-founder Jerry Yang Joins Yahoo Singapore For Charity Initiative

Purple Hope, a charity initiative by Yahoo Singapore, has raised more than SGD $50,000 for the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) through a campaign entitled “Hair For Hope.” Interestingly, ten employees went the extra mile to shave their heads, showing their dedication to the cause. The campaign, though small scale, is graced by Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo (NASQAQ:YHOO).

This is Yahoo’s first project under the Purple Hope initiative. CCF was chosen after a Yahoo staff member made a personal pledge during the Hair for Hope campaign earlier this year.

We reached out to one of the “shavees” who shared her thoughts with us below:

I feel swell to say the least. I was reading about the six year old girl Charmaine who passed away last Friday from cancer and can’t imagine what her parents must be going through. You see cancer affects people indiscriminately – young or old, rich or poor. It is painful to watch children suffer; there is no justification in the world for something like this. Shaving my head is a symbolic gesture of support for those undergoing chemotherapy. Here at Yahoo I have received tremendous support from my colleagues for being the only girl shavee. They tell me that I am brave but it is not me who is brave; brave are those battling cancer. I would do anything to beat cancer and show support to those who are suffering from this dreadful illness.

$50,000 isn’t a huge amount when you consider the size of Yahoo. Nonetheless, it’s still admirable work for the better of the community.
