Rising startups on Tech In Asia: e-scooters, space debris, and more

Which are the startups that are on the path to becoming the next big thing? In this regular post, we give you an overview of the companies that have raised money in the past week, as well as those we think investors should look at.

1. Klook (Hong Kong)

Klook, a travel services booking platform, received US$225 million in a series D+ funding round led by SoftBank Vision Fund. Sequoia China, Matrix Partners, TCV, and OurCrowd participated in the round. This brings Klook’s series D fundraise to a total of US$425 million. More info.

2. ShopBack (Singapore)

Rewards app shopBack raised US$45 million in a funding round co-led by new investors Rakuten Capital and EV Growth. This brings the company’s funding to US$83 million to date. More info.

3. Coda Payments (Singapore)

Coda Payments, an alternative payment service provider, has been profitable for around a year and a half. The startup focuses on enabling different modes of payment for digital content providers, especially game developers and publishers. While Coda has no plans to fundraise at the moment, it’s seeking potential acquisitions to expand its business. More info.

4. iFlix (Malaysia)

Video-streaming service iFlix raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Japanese media and entertainment group Yoshimoto Kogyo. The two companies will form a joint venture to distribute Yoshimoto Kogyo’s content on Iflix. More info.

5. Astroscale (Japan)

Astroscale, a startup developing a technology solution for space debris removal, raised US$30 million for its series D round. This amount comes in addition to its US$50 million series D fundraise in October 2018. More info.

6. Clozette (Singapore)

Clozette, a profitable, eight-year-old social content network focusing on fashion and beauty, bagged US$10 million in series C funding. Cool Japan Fund, a public-private fund under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, provided the funding. More info.

7. Cashfree (India)

Cashfree, an online payments platform and banking technology startup, raised US$5.5 million in series A funding. Smilegate Investment led the funding round, with participation from existing investor Y Combinator, as well as George Osborne, former Finance Minister of UK, and Vellayan Subbiah, former Managing Director of Cholamandalam Investment. 8. International Compliance Workshop (Hong Kong)

International Compliance Workshop, a supply chain compliance and quality assurance platform, raised US$2.5 million in a series A funding round. MindWorks Ventures and Innovation and Technology Venture Fund Corporation co-led the round. More info.

9. Fore Coffee (Indonesia)

Fore Coffee, an online-to-offline specialty coffee startup, raised an additional US$1 million for its series A funding round. The investment was led by East Ventures, with participation from SMDV, Pavilion Capital, Agaeti Venture Capital, and angel investors. More info.

10. Reboot (Singapore)

Executive coaching platform Reboot raised S$1 million (US$738,000) in seed funding. It also plans to raise a series A round next year. More info.

11. KMC (Philippines)

KMC, a co-working and staff leasing company, raised an undisclosed amount of series A funding from ASEAN Industrial Growth Fund. KMC chairman Gregory Kittelson said it was “the largest series A round in the Philippines”. More info.

12. Medigo (Indonesia)

Medical software-as-a-service startup Medigo raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding in Q4 2018. Venturra Discovery, the seed-stage arm of Indonesian firm Venturra Capital, provided the funds. More info.

13. Ekrut (Indonesia)

Ekrut, a headhunting startup and job portal, raised an undisclosed amount of pre-series A funding. The round was led by Venturra Discovery, with participation from Bizreach, Azure Ventures, East Ventures, Prasetia Dwidharma, and Skystar Capital. More info.
