In brief: Confusion follows India’s Aadhaar verdict

Private enterprises as well as scores of government departments maybe staring at a situation of confusion post the Supreme Court’s verdict on Aadhaar, which has allowed people to request for deletion of their Aadhaar data from the database of companies. According to experts, companies and government agencies that relied on Aadhaar for customer verification may be flooded with requests for deletions in the coming weeks.

Aadhaar is India’s much-touted digital identity infrastructure. A host of government services and private services like banks and telcos have already linked to Aadhaar. “Any startup can use the mobile phone as one factor and Aadhar as the second factor and create something better than Apple Pay in their garage,” Nandan Nilekani, former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), told Tech in Asia. UIDAI is the organization  that created Aadhaar.

Consumers are now wondering how they should go about delinking their Aadhaar details. Companies are also waiting for compliance guidelines from various ministries. However, it shouldn’t take long for private companies to come up with ways to comply with deletion requests because there won’t be a huge technological overhead, an expert told The Economic Times.
