Hello reader,
I didn’t write much about crypto last year, but when I did, stablecoins were always in the spotlight.
This was the case when I dove into Tazapay’s stablecoin push last year, with the firm saying at the time that stablecoins have become a “major growth driver.”
No surprises there, as stablecoins have been shaking the foundations of Southeast Asia’s payments pipelines.
Today’s featured story is also about stablecoins, but with a twist.
The recent development comes from Coins.ph, a company best known for its crypto trading services. The Philippine firm is making a play to expand beyond volatile virtual currencies and step into the remittance and cross-border transaction space.
Its CEO Wei Zhou told me that Coins.ph is positioning itself as a “global gateway.”
By using stablecoins, the firm is building a remittance rail that’s faster and cheaper than traditional banking. With more companies jumping on the stablecoin train, the days of waiting for cross-border payments to clear may be numbered.

While it’s leaning into remittances, Coins.ph aims to be an all-in-one financial app. It currently supports retail payments and money transfers with fiat currency through QR Ph, the Philippines’ standard for QR-based payments.
