Hello reader,

Have you tried Gemini 3 yet? I have.

I’ve asked it a wide range of questions, from gift ideas for tween boys (I have nephews!) to the price of gold vs. the market price of the Philippine Stock exchange index, as recommended by our resident AI editor Scott Shuey.

It passed those tests with flying colors.

So I tried to crack it with what it said it could do well: coach sports. On its blog, Google said Gemini 3 could analyze a pickleball game and recommend drills for the athlete.

For my test – and amusement – I uploaded an amateur doubles badminton game I played with my fiance two years ago. And well, color me impressed.

Gemini 3 provided a detailed breakdown, from how I could improve my stance when waiting for the service to my grip technique. It provided time stamps on instances to highlight good and bad moves.

Still, it struggled when I asked it to analyze my partner’s game because it couldn’t tell which player he was. In the video, he was wearing almost the same outfit as our opponents, and it mistakenly assessed their moves instead.

When I clarified that my partner was wearing red shoes, it then gave a detailed analysis of his game.

I was amused that it also noted that my partner tends to favor his right knee, probably because of an old injury to his left. I believe it made that deduction because he was wearing a knee brace on his left leg in the video. I never noted that in my prompt, though.

So, can Gemini actually replace your sports coach? It depends. If you’ve never gotten tips from an expert, Gemini would be a passable tool to get advice on technique.

Personally, most of what Gemini told me were things I’ve heard from my old coach already. That was particularly impressive – that it said what an expert had already noticed about my game. If I were to have more weekend matches, I’d probably pay attention to Gemini – just to remind me of my old coach’s notes.
