Delivery Hero announced on Tuesday that it will close its tech hubs in Istanbul and Taipei, as well as reduce its workforce in Berlin and other global locations, according to an internal email seen by Tech in Asia.
The move is part of the online food delivery company’s plan to boost efficiency “without compromising on our potential for long term growth.”
“In order to build an economically sustainable and profitable business in an environment that has become more challenging for our industry, we have had to bring efficiencies across the organization,” CEO Niklas Östberg wrote in the email.
The company did not disclose the exact number of affected employees but said that it will support them with severance packages, counseling, and mobility assistance.
Tech in Asia has reached out to Delivery Hero to learn more.
Since it was founded in 2008, Delivery Hero has grown to operate in more than 70 countries and has over 31,000 employees across its businesses worldwide, according to its LinkedIn page. It operates platforms such as Foodpanda in Asia, Glovo in Europe, and PedidosYa in Latin America.
In September, the company was mulling to divest its Southeast Asian business, including Foodpanda. A potential deal would involve its operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, and the Philippines.
It also slashed its workforce in Asia Pacific in a bid “to become leaner and more agile.”
