This startup claims to have a solution to the lack of science labs in India’s schools

LabInApp, an India-based edtech startup, has raised a seed investment from Unitus Seed Fund and Madan Padaki of Sylvant Advisors

Founded in 2012 in Hubli, LabInApp is an app that provides a three-dimensional virtual laboratory for students and teachers in schools. Students can conduct virtual experiments and reinforce learned concepts on the app.

The startup focuses on creating a virtual learning environment that is easy to access compared to a real world science laboratory. LapInApp claims that 75 percent of schools in India lack the means to provide their students a full-fledged physics, chemistry, or biology laboratory, though it’s unclear what’s the source of their data. Their virtual labs are aimed at addressing this shortage.

Earlier this year, LabInApp won StartEdu, an edtech startup competition held by Unitus Seed Fund and Sylvant Advisors. The winners of the competition would receive a chance to pitch for seed funding of INR 10 million (US$157,000) from Unitus.

LabInApp has currently enrolled 35 secondary schools following the CBSE syllabus from the tier two cities of Hubli, Dharwad, Davangere, and Gulabarga to implement the app into the daily curriculum. Pavan Shinde, co-founder and CEO at LabInApp, said in a statement: “With the support of Unitus Seed Fund and Sylvant, and little modification in the current product, we can even serve state boards and ICSE syllabus.”

Following the success of edtech startup competitions, Unitus has also launched StartEdu3, another program created to find more early-stage edtech startups. Sylvant is also a part of this initiative and is looking to incubate the winner of this competition and provide mentoring. The winners of StartEdu3 will also get an opportunity to pitch to Unitus for INR 10 million (US$157,000).
