At CEDEC 2014, mobile app analytics company App Annie shared a pretty interesting breakdown of the mobile app industry in Japan and elsewhere that has since been re-posted on Chinese gaming sites. For those interested in the games industry, one detail in particular jumps out with regard to Japan’s mobile market:

App Store is blue, Google Play is yellow
As the chart above shows, in July of this year, mobile games accounted for around 40% of all mobile downloads in Japan, but revenues from mobile games accounted for nearly 90% of the total revenue generated by Japan’s mobile app markets. That puts Japan squarely at the top of the charts when it comes to revenue generated by mobile games.
Here’s how the country stacks up with the other top performers. As you can see, South Korea, China, and Taiwan are all in the top 10, despite the fact that China doesn’t actually have the Google Play store at all (instead, China’s Android users download their apps from a wide variety of third-party stores).

App Store is blue, Google Play is yellow, chart depicts video game revenues as a percentage of total mobile app revenues.
Clearly, if you’re looking to make money off a mobile game, Japan’s market is one you need to be seriously considering.
