China’s tech community is huge but also full of clones. What we see in the U.S can also be found in China. It’s amazing how fast technology are copied and localized in China. That includes Tumblr, Instagram, Foursquare and many more. In fact, many of these Internet services are pretty successful. For example Renren (Facebook) and Sina Weibo (Twitter, not included in the pic) each has 160 and 50 million users, respectively.
That’s not all. Copying in China reached a higher level with Groupon.cn (also not included in the pic). The Chinese group-buying clone blatantly took Groupon’s domain name in China, design and features. That forces Groupon to register a new name, Gaopeng, when it entered China through a partnership with Tencent.
The Chinese government is putting in effort to change its tech culture. A patent development strategy introduced earlier this year aims to encourage and foster innovation within the country. It’s a much-needed long-term plan introduced by the Chinese government, especially if it wants to be Asia’s Silicon Valley… and Beijing seems likely to be that city.
